Free Training Offered through the Fire Corps Academy – Register Today!

Tuesday, 16 August 2011 18:29

Register for the Fire Corps Academy classes taking place on Friday, August 19. Three sessions are available covering an introduction to Fire Corps, how to start and implement a program, and Fire Corps’ role in disaster response. Additional classes will be offered Tuesday, August 23 and Wednesday, August 24.

Fire Corps is a federally-funded program that enables community members to assist their local fire/EMS department in non-operational roles. This frees emergency personnel to focus on training and emergency response, while providing an opportunity for citizens to lend their skills and time to help their communities. The Fire Corps Academy provides department personnel and Fire Corps program coordinators with tools, resources, and information to best utilize their non-emergency volunteers.

Classes are free, but attendance is limited to 30 participants per session. You can register, see course descriptions, and view supplemental training opportunities at www.firecorps.org/academy.

Check back for new courses coming out later this month! Emailinfo@firecorps.org for questions about the Fire Corps Academy.

September is National Preparedness Month

Tuesday, 16 August 2011 18:26

September is National Preparedness Month (NPM), and your department, Fire Corps team, business, or other organization can help encourage more Americans to be prepared by joining the NPM Coalition. This year’s theme is A Time to Remember. A Time to Prepare.

Fire Corps teams can organize a variety of events for their communities. Host a preparedness open house and plan visits to local schools and senior centers to discuss emergency plans and fire safety. Consider hosting a preparedness workshop, day, or fair. Ladder trucks and ambulances serve as a perfect backdrop for an educational booth where you distribute home fire safety checklists or surveys, schedule smoke alarm installations, and/or answer questions about smoke and CO alarms and offer fire safety tips. Post your preparedness activity atcommunity.fema.gov.

Membership in the NPM Coalition is free and open to all public and private sector organizations. National Preparedness Month is sponsored by the Ready Campaign and Citizen Corps. Organizations that join the NPM Coalition work to promote emergency preparedness in any way that they can during the month of September. Registered members have access to resources and tips to help promote emergency preparedness.

Visit Fire Corps’ online National Preparedness Month Resource Center for tools, resources, and materials that Fire Corps teams can utilize to help ready themselves and their community for emergency situations at www.firecorps.org/npm.
